The Flaming Lips was formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After numerous member changes throughout the years, the band currently consists of Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Drozd (guitars, keyboards, bass, vocals), Derek Brown (keyboards, guitars, percussion), Matt Duckworth Kirksey (drums, percussion, keyboards) and Nicholas Ley (percussion, drums).
The Flaming Lips recorded and released several albums and EPs on an indie label before signing to Warner Brothers in 1992. That same year they released Hit to Death in the Future Head. In 1993 the band broke into the mainstream with the album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart which included the hit single “She Don’t Use Jelly.” Since then, they have released a series of full-length albums along with a slew of live albums, holiday music, and compilations. They have won a total of three Grammy Awards, including two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
