Muse was formed in 1994 in Teignmouth, Devon in the UK. The band was founded by current member Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums).
In 1999, Muse released their debut album Showbiz followed by their sophomore album, Origin of Symmetry in 2001. In 2003, Absolution was released and produced Muse’s first top-ten hit, “Time Is Running Out”, along with three top-twenty hits: “Hysteria”, “Sing for Absolution” and “Butterflies and Hurricanes”. Absolution was certified gold in the US in 2007 and was the first of seven consecutive UK number-one albums.
Next up was the band’s fourth studio album Black Holes and Revelations (2006), followed by The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012). These albums cemented Muse as one of the world’s major stadium acts. Their seventh album Drones was released in 2005 and topped the US Billboard 200. Their eighth album, Simulation Theory came in 2018 and was followed by Muse’s most recent release, Will of the People in August of 2022.
Muse has won two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, five MTV Europe Music Awards, and eight NME Awards. The band received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in 2012, and as of June 2016, has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.
Fun Fact: Muse own jetpacks but are not allowed to use them. They planned to fly onto the stage of their 2007 UK concerts on jetpacks, but health and safety regulations put a stop to it.
