No Doubt was formed in 1986 in Anaheim, California. The band currently (and for most of its existence) consisted of vocalist Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont (guitarist), Tony Kanal (bassist), and Adrian Young (drummer). Though not officially members of the band, they have been supported by trombonist and keyboardist Gabrial McNair and trumpeter and keyboardist Stephen Bradley in live performances since the mid-1990s.
No Doubt released their self-titled debut in 1992 and followed that with their sophomore album The Beacon Street Collection in 1995. Their third album, Tragic Kingdom, is the album that pushed the band into the mainstream with the singles “Don’t Speak”, “Spiderwebs”, and “Just A Girl.” The song “Don’t Speak” set a record when it spent 16 weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified Diamond in 1999 in the US and Canada. The album has sold over 16 million copies worldwide.
Their fourth album, Return of Saturn was released in 2000. Even with the success of the singles “Simple Kind of Life”, “New”, and”Ex-Girlfriend”, the album was not able to match the overall success of Tragic Kingdom. That doesn’t mean that it didn’t do well. The album debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200, earned No Doubt a Grammy Nomination for Best Rock Album, and received a platinum certification in May of 2000.
In 2001, No Doubt released Rock Steady which featured collaborations with Jamaican artists Bounty Killer, Sly and Robbie, and Lady Saw. The album earned two Grammy awards for the singles “Hey Baby” and “Underneath It All”, along with a nomination for the song “Hella Good”.
The band took a hiatus in 2004 to work on solo projects. Frontwoman Gwen Stefani released two successful solo albums; Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in 2004 and The Sweet Escape in 2006. Guitarist Tom Dumont released an album called The Living Album under his own solo music project called Invincible Overlord in 2005.
No Doubt began working on their sixth studio album in 2008, which they released in 2012 titled Push and Shove. The album debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Top 200. The band went on hiatus again in 2013 and has had a few performances since then. There are no current plans for No Doubt to release new music.
Fun Fact: Drummer Adrian Young lied to get into the band. During his audition, he said that he had been playing drums for eight years when he had only been playing for a year and a half.
